Hand Painted Papers Lesson

In the last post I shared photos of members of
the "Hand Painted Papers and Sustainable Art
Class" I taught at Trail's End Art Association
Aug. 26th and 27th.
Here are some of the steps and a review of the lesson
for the students who requested them:
Hand Painted Paper Class - Review of steps
Our goal in this class is to enjoy the process of
creating hand painted papers, learn about new textures,
transparent and translucent layers.
Black Gessoed Board
Coat one 12 x 12 inch foam core board
or hard board with Golden Black Gesso
White Gesso Papers
Paint your deli wrap paper with 2 different transparencies of white.
Opaque, translucent. Use the plain deli wrap as the transparent white
Palette >All Golden Fluid Acrylics:
Zinc White, Yellow ochre, Burnt Sienna, Anthraquinone Blue, Paynes Gray
Painting Hand Painted Papers
First Layer of Golden Paint on Deli Paper with no glazing liquid
Use freezer paper palette and a separate sheet of freezer paper on newspaper.
First Layer of Paint on Deli Paper
Create combinations of gray, browns, greens
by mixing with this limited palette
on 3 different sheets of deli paper. Let dry.
Paint a light thin glaze with no glazing liquid.
Paint a medium light glaze with no glazing liquid.
Paint a medium dark sheet glaze with no glazing liquid.
Second Layer of Paint and Glazing Liquid on Deli Paper
Paint light sheet with same palette plus glazing liquid
using drops from brush and adding water with slightly darker paint.
Paint medium glaze sheet with glazing liquid by first
painting freezer paper surface in graded colors and
taking a mono prints.
Paint medium dark glaze sheet with glazing liquid by
painting broken areas of paint light and medium and
taking a print or spray with water. Also, drip with darker colors.
Third Layer of Paint and Glazing Liquid on Deli Paper – Texture
Continue using the same palette.
on top of dry sheets, we just painted.
Paint light sheet glaze plus glazing liquid
using tooth brush for fine spatter
Paint medium glaze sheet with glazing liquid by painting
freezer paper surface in graded colors and taking a mono print
Paint medium dark glaze sheet with glazing liquid
by painting with spattering technique of tapping loaded brush against
handle of another brush. Lights against darks and darks on lights

Golden Matte Medium is used to adhere the shapes
to the gessoed board in the next step.
Design the shapes
Take out your black gessoed board and white gessoed deli papers.
Using the horizontal band design for your composition,
add a curve or two so that it creates a feel similar to water
flowing over rocks.
Remember the black and white example I shared on the computer.
See the photo of beach rocks below:
This photo is one idea of how to compose the rock shapes in a curved shape.
Once you like your shapes, adhere with Golden matte medium
blot or lift excess medium. Use a brayer on top of towel
or recycle a hard plastic bottle and use it as a brayer to seal edges.
As soon as you start to see what you want, adhere with matte medium.
Strengthen your composition by placing the darkest darks next to the whitest white.

Glaze with paint and glazing liquid to build thin layers where needed.
When you are painting white or light areas of water, remember the
sustainable art technique of using clean recycled plastic wrappers or
plastic film to press and lift for water-like textures.
