Youth and Culture at the Market

Another delight at the Salt Spring Saturday Market
are what the regular vendors call "the busking circles".
The market organizers give musicians and
artists 20 minutes to occupy a circle (about three feet wide).
Market goers buy the art or put money in the musician’s case.

As I observed musicians in this spot, I was
delighted and amazed when the young woman in
the photo above played her violin. It was a pleasure to
hear her music and to see the crowd respond with
generous contributions.

Many of the young musicians had a teacher or parent
standing by and were a bit shy, but eager to perform.
Each performer would wait off to the side.
When the time was right, they would enter the
circle for their moment “in the spotlight”.
